On Lead Foundation Program

At The Developing Canine, we specialize in off leash reliability, meaning you can be sure your dog will listen to you around your home and beyond the garden gate.

Before your dog will listen to you off leash, he needs to know what to do on leash. We are results oriented; we don’t want your dog to be half way trained.

The Foundation Program, is your first step to off leash reliability. You will learn to manage your dog’s behavior while he is on leash and prepare him fully for one of our OFF Leash Reliable Programs.
During the Foundation Program you will learn to teach your dog the following skills ON LEAD:

  • Walk nicely
  • Sit
  • Down
  • Respect doors
  • Place-go to a specific place when asked
  • Potty Training
  • Crate Training
  • Bite Inhibition
  • Leadership Skills
  • Handling Skills

Once you have completed the ON lead program, you can choose from one of the Off Lead Reliable Programs.

If you have worked with another trainer in the past, or have done a pretty good job yourself, but need a bit more help, you are welcome to bypass the Foundation program.

All you need is to do ONE private lesson before moving directly into an off leash reliable program. This will help you save time and money

OFF Lead Reliable Programs

The definition of a well- trained dog is one who not only listens when he is on leash, but is also reliable when the leash is off. Once you begin working toward off leash reliability, you will see results immediately.

Off Leash reliability isn’t just for stopping unwanted behavior, such as jumping on the kids or friends, chasing the cat or running out the door.  Having a dog that listens to you without a leash means you get to enjoy hikes in the woods, swimming at the beach and lakes, running, biking and all the other wonderful adventures, you can think of.  You can expect to have your dog coming to you reliably in as little as 2 weeks!

Take a look at our programs below and let Carolyn help you have “A Well Trained Dog that is a Joy for Life!”

Residency Programs

Don’t have the time to devote to the initial training, one of our Residency programs may be right for you. Residency programs are perfect for those of you who want to give your dog the advantage of having a professional as his initial instructor.

Our professional trainer, Carolyn, specializes in teaching dogs the skills they need to succeed, off leash, in your home or out in the world. When your dog stays with us, he stays in our home, as part of our family. We only train one dog at a time allowing us to provide your dog with the time, consistency and structure needed for training. Something many of us are unable to provide in today’s busy world.

“Live and Learn”

For those of you who don’t have the time to invest in your dog’s initial training, but can’t stand the thought of her being gone for two weeks, this program will give you and your dog a jump start to a happy life, off leash!

Once your dog is returned to you, you will then learn how to live with your dog, as well as your dog learned to live with us.

You and your dog will accomplish the following OFF LEAD:

  • Loose lead walking
  • On and off leash heel
  • Off (get off people, counters.)
  • Sit and Down for an extended period of time, next to you and at a distance,
  • Place
  • Leave it
  • Drop it
  • Sit at doors and in car to prevent bolting
  • Quiet
  • Come when called from a distance every time!

Swim! Bark! Run! UNLeashed!
Your dog will Swim, Bark and Run UNLeashed while staying with us for 14 fun filled days. This immersion program takes your dog to the highest level of off leash control before he is returned to you.

The extra 7 days your dog stays with us will ensure your dog has had lots of work off leash. He’ll enjoy adventures on the River Walk, at local parks and in distracting situations like greeting people at the Uptown shops! He’ll accompany us to lessons with other dogs and work in new and different neighborhoods.

Once he is brought home, you begin your lessons with a dog that has a much clearer understanding of the expectations. Less work for you, faster learning for the dog, equaling a quicker route to fully enjoying your dog in all of your daily activities. All of this will ensure your Developing Canine returns to your home truly, “A Joy for Life!”

You and your dog will learn the following on and off leash, with distractions:

  • Loose lead walking
  • On and Off leash heel
  • Off (get off people, counters.)
  • Sit and Down for an extended period of time next to you and at a distance
  • Place
  • Leave it
  • Drop it
  • Sit at the doors of buildings and cars, to prevent bolting
  • Quiet
  • Come when called from a distance every time!
